[NJARC] Asbestos in old radios

Hi Jim,

Interesting thought -- but I doubt it would be
cost-effective. The set is a $5 basket-case 5-tuber.
If it was a Zenith Stratosphere (for example) or some
other high-end set, then it might be worth contacting
a specialist. Even then, I doubt that it would be
cheap to remedy.

I don't mean to imply that Zenith consoles had
asbestos in them. As far as I knw, they do not. But at
least some TransOceanic models, and a fair number of
30s/40s sets from other manufacturers, did contain
asbestos. I think they were trying to protect the
cabinets from hot spots in AC/DC sets.

I enjoyed the reflector discussion, as I've thought
about this topic for some time, and finally had a
"close encounter."
