[NJARC] Closing, A Store Near You

Hi Marty/Folks,
BINGO! The two places I thought of while writing my
Trip Down Memory Lane were Greenbrook and Williams.
I've never been to Greenbrook, but I've been past
there many times, and need to check it out.
I used to frequent Willaims in the 80's and early
90's. In fact, I bought out all of their HV
elecrolytics and Orange Drops, circa early 90's. I'm
sorry to hear that they're no longer in business, but
I'm not surprised. The Internet really killed those
local specialty elctronics houses.
It's great how we all have fond memories of
electronics stores from our younger days. I can see
from this thread the geographic difference between the
NY/North Jersey guys and the South Jersey/Philly guys.
Coming from South Jersey, there was Almo in Philly and
Vineland and Atlantic City. Plus Midstate Radio Supply
in Camden and Berlin.
Trenton had Nidisco which closed in the late 80's, I
think. I'm sure Trenton had lots of radio stores, but
most were gone by the early/mid 80's when I moved to
the area.
Does anybody remember the BIG Lafayette store at the
"Circle" in Vineland? I used to work there! The
building is gone now -- there's a Denny's in its
place.
It closed in the early 90's, I think. We still had
some tube equipment for sale in the mid-to-late 70's.
The Comstat 35 CB, and Bogen PA amps. Plus a BIG stock
of tubes, most of which were not going anywhere.
I WISH I had known about that store in the Vincentown
area! Darn!
It's nice to know that at least a few of these local
stores are soldiering on. For how much longer, who
knows. I suspect the remaining ones are in
low-overhead locations where the family has owned the
building for years.
One last thing: IMHO, Lafayette did NOT commit CB
suicide! They did very, very well with that stuff.
Where they DID screw up was putting all their eggs in
the Quadraphonic Hi-Fi basket. That really hurt them.
Audiophiles simply did *not* take Lafayette-branded
hi-fi equipment very seriously.
Thanks again for the memories,
John R.
