Bill -
I just went throught this with my neighbor's son's car a few weeks ago. If you can obtain it, try using a product called "Mother's" mag and aluminum polish. It was specifically used for chrome wheels (don't do it though because today's aluminium car wheels are clearcoated). I use it for chrome and brasswork on radio pieces and it works great! If you own a dremel tool, take a standard "Q-Tip" and cut the stem in half so that you have 2 pieces. Take one and insert it into the "chuck". Place a small amount of polish on the q-tip, and turn the dremel on to the slowest speed. You can buff the nails out to a really smooth finish with it. If the Mothers polish is not available at your local auto parts store, use the chrome polish with the dremel. Too bad they do'nt have a "modified" catagory for the pinewood derby. I tried to talk my neighbor into putting a weedwhacker 2 stroker motor on his sons! Hi:)
