[NJARC] Metal repair in old radio restoration

Hey gang:
I've always been a pretty aggressive scrounger (and I have the garage to
prove it, although that hardly makes me unique in this group...) but I
just went and had a SERIOUS lapse of common sense and will be taking
delivery of a working MIG welding machine in a few days.
Now I've done a teensy bit of welding in the past, but my welding skills
are kinda like my radio restoration skills: I talk about it a lot more
than I actually do anything useful!
I got this primarily to use in some auto restoration work, but I figure
it might come in handy for radio repair too (maybe for repairing some
really, REALLY big solder joints :-)
I figure that having this thing could potentially be a HUGE advantage
when something comes up that needs to be welded, maybe a cracked steel or
aluminum casting or something else like that. I've seen some miraculous
restoration work of this type done by people with a high degree of skill
and an artist's eye.
Only catch is, I'll have a long way to go before I'm ready for the kind
of precision and finishing work that would be necessary to do anything
more than crudely stick pieces of metal together.
Does anyone in the club have any experience in this area and would be
willing to share their thoughts on the subject? And maybe even be willing
to help me figure out what I might expect to accomplish here?
Our repair clinics could be sporting some fireworks soon!
