I went to my local Radio Shack store (Hillsborough, NJ) the other day. The forty-ish manager greeted me and asked if he could help. I told him I wanted a filament transformer. He said 'what's that'. I explained that I had looked on the Radio Shack website and that what I wanted was listed and he might have it. To both our surprise there it was on the rack, only it was called a power transformer (12.6V CT) - my mistake. I also picked up some new soldering tips for my Weller soldering gun. Naturally the next topic was if I could use a new 'free' cell phone. I told him my phone was still under contract so I couldn't do anything right now. That got me off the hook.
While brousing the clearance section I found an educational toy for my grandson so I had a successful visit to the store. My point is, Radio Shack is the only place around to get some basic electronic parts and components and we should support them. Maybe they will continue to provide these basic parts if there is enough interest and sales. Nick Senker
