I looked through "A Pictorial Album of Wireless and Radio, 1905-1928" by
Harold S. Greenwood, but didn't see anything that looked like your unit.
By your description, it could be a resistor-capacitor coupled amplifier.
Although in the second picture, the upper right hand "tin" box seems to
have the outline of a transformer?
The components appear to be of the late 1920s vintage so the newspaper
might actually date the unit. I am not sure when the UV/UX tube bases
were in production, that may also help date it.
Time to grab a meter and start to reverse engineer the amplifier /
detector and draw a schematic!
