A lot of old electrolytics dried out, like in the first ten 
years of life, and lost their capacitance without shorting. 
  Many old sets have caps just tacked in in parallel.  I 
always cut them dead, but leave the cans in place if they're 
above the chassis.  You might need to add terminal strips to 
have a place to connect everything.
