[NCARC] Help with Kantronics KPC-3 Plus TNC

I have been having difficulty figuring out how to implement 
a particular function with my TNC.

When put in different modes, the TNC quits responding to 
terminal input. The manual says to send 3 <Ctrl-C> characters
from a terminal or PC in order to exit this mode.  This doesn't
seem to be working for me.  
I am using Hyperterminal as my terminal emulator program.

Example:  When put in GPS mode, the TNC is designed to 
listen on the serial port for the GPS.  When I want to use the
TNC in a different mode, I am unable to ever get a response
when I try and send control-C characters from Hyperterminal.
I have to do a hard reset in order to regain 
communications with the TNC.
