To Chuck:
I’m just now getting to reading…. And thinking about… mesh email that goes back about a month. Hopefully, you will see responses to things that caused you to wonder if I had died some weeks ago.
Relative to your comment below:
I do not see the point of using half/duplex for Winlink. Half-duplex or simplex, a minimalist station must STILL make a connection to the Winlink RMS station. The ONLY function of the RMS Station, is to allow an RMS client to connect to the RMS Server. Using a half/duplex repeater would only serve to double the bandwidth consumed … to achieve the identical function. It would also raise expense required in terms of diplexers, control circuits, etc. Fundamentally, an RMS server is a very simple system; a mobile transceiver with power supply, a TNC, and a Computer. Swap the TNC for a Soundcard interface (Signalink) if you wish, and use a software TNC.
I believe going to half-duplex WOULD make sense if you were to use the Winlink station as a REPEATER. Then, offering half-duplex as an alternative to using the Winlink Packet station as a digipeater… would make some sense. In our case, the digipeat option is disabled. It might make sense to allow the RMS Station to serve as a digipeater….. to cover the situation when our Internet connection goes down. In that case the KAS Winlink node could relay traffic to other Winlink RMS servers in the area, that would be out of range for the minimalist stations. But again, having it operate half-duplex would only serve to double the bandwidth consumed.
My thoughts
Bill

If Winlink is a viable and worthwhile communications scheme,
should it be using a repeater instead of simplex?
I don’t know much about AX.25 but I know you have a lot of packet experience.
Yes. It is so sad to see the same mistakes from packet radio in the 1980s
repeated in other technologies in the 3rd millennium.
Ignorance can be reduced, stupid cannot be reduced.
Would full duplex be important with that?
VHF/UHF repeaters are half-duplex.
The advantage is coverage of minimal stations; HT, Mobile, Portable(EMCOMM?), or
home stations with antennas < 100' AGL. ;-)
