I’m going to give you the Executive Summary right up front. See my request at the end of this email. —Moe, AB8XA
DARA, KAS, Helke Rd, and Vandalia were deployed with the MVMA BroadBandHamNet mindset of “All you need in a mesh is lots of Channel -2 Omnis.” These four omnis have no DTD’d nodes for directional linking. We’ve found linking by omni-overlap/omni-neighboring is a poor way to go. We’ve also discovered an omni’s received LQ of all neighbors goes down as more neighbors are added — and that the most neighbors an omni should have for good LQ is two, with a usable limit of three. Isolating omnis into separate SSIDs has helped, but we must go back and equip these solo omnis with directional nodes for linking wherever possible. That should start with Vandalia, then a KAS to West Xenia water tank link.
AE8I Tipp City is now a near 80' 5.8 Bullet M5/L-Com Omni and a 2.4 NSM2-XW currently aimed at Vandalia and Helke Rd. The previous 2.4 Bullet M2/L-Com has been decommissioned.
Here’s what Ken’s new NSM2 sees (aimed toward Vandalia, not DARA:
Here’s what the Vandalia omni sees:
And here’s what DARA sees:
AE8I has the potential to have a great link with Vandalia. But it’s a link to nowhere if Vandalia can’t link with DARA. And DARA can’t link well with anybody, including nearby W8GUC, because it hears too many 2.4 GHz nodes, even with a somewhat restrictive SSID.
A filter on Vandalia will help its receive, but that is NOT going to help DARA receive it.
Please let Bill know you support a NSM3 on Vandalia aimed at a matching one on DARA, as well as a NSM3 on KAS aimed at a matching one at KAS!
