Ladies and Gentlemen...
Here's the latest on SKYWARN Recognition Day which
takes place on December 7, 2002, from 0000 GMT to
2400 GMT. There are currently 106 NWS offices
registered to participate in the event. The NWS office
in Eureka, California, has not been posted to the web
yet, but they are officially registered.
No web updates at hamradio.noaa.gov will be made
from now until December 2, 2002. Thanks to all
of you who informed me about minor errors or
suggestions to improve the web site. If the correction
has not yet been made, it will be Monday. Yes,
I know La Crosse is spelled with an 'e' at the end -
I'll make sure that gets fixed. Sorry about that, Todd.
I also know the Dodge City call sign is not correct - that, too,
will be corrected.
Remember (I promise, this is the last reminder about
this): inform the airport manager about SRD if you
will operate from a NWS facility located on airport
grounds.
Now for security. Due to the attacks of September 11, 2001,
and the ongoing war on terrorism, security at all federal
locations has increased. This holds true for NWS facilities.
Each office handles security slightly differently. At the
very least, I would expect that every amateur radio
operator coming to a NWS facility will have to sign a
visitor book and present picture identification.
If security needs to be heightened due to external
circumstances, more restrictions will be placed. This
simply represents the world in which we now live.
It is up to local NWS station officials to ensure the security of
employees, visitors, and the facility. All SKYWARN
operators must comply with the security efforts placed
by those officials. This includes terminating operations
if requested. If this occurs, you are authorized to move
operations off-site to another location.
So, the bottom line is this: work with the NWS offices.
Discover what needs to be done to comply with local
security measures. This has not been an obstacle in the
past, and it should not be one now as long as we all work
together.
This is the final SRD update for this week. There will be
daily updates from 12/2 - 12/5.
Happy Turkey Day!
