[MRIC] Agenda for November 10 Meeting

Dan,

It was nice chatting with you this evening. Per our conversation, I believe
we were talking past each other in our emails, but in agreement. When I said
it would be on the agenda of the first meeting in 2007, and not this meeting,
I was referring to the election vote itself.

I do not set the agenda for a meeting. It is set by the whole group during
the prior meeting, and there was no mention during the April meeting of
putting a nominating process on the agenda for November. The subject items for this
agenda were summarized in the minutes of the last meeting, which were
emailed to all back in April. The only thing I changed was to remove ATV and APRS
presentations because the presenters canceled. I view my role as coordinator
to keep things moving along in whatever direction the group chooses, in as
fair a means as possible. I suspect we have all been a part of some Amateur
Radio organization that is controlled by a few, and I didn't want that to happen
with MRIC.

However, we will be setting the agenda of our first 2008 meeting this
Saturday, so I'm sure the subject of elections will come up and we will probably
discuss it somewhat at that time. If you would like to make a motion at the
beginning of the meeting Saturday while we are talking about the agenda, to add
a time specifically to discuss this, you certainly can. Regarding nominations,
in my mind I figured we would just keep it very simple and let anyone that
wanted to run for office announce it, and therefore not need to be an official
agenda item, but we can certainly discuss what process we want to follow for
nominations. Whatever the committee wants to do, is fine with me.

My emphasis the past month or so has been to keep us focused on getting our
objectives accomplished at this meeting that we set back in April (HF vote,
and state-wide digital presentations). I apologize for any misunderstanding,
and I have probably gone on too long already, but wanted to reassure everyone
there is no need for concern. Elections will be fair and equitable.

Thanks again for your time, and especially your contributions to MRIC. I'm
glad you are part of our organization.

Respectfully,

Brett Hammond
Chairman, MRIC

Brett,

May I bring up a point of order?

For a proposed agenda to become the official agenda for a meeting, it must
be adopted by the assembly at the outset of the meeting. At the time that an
agenda is presented for adoption, it is in order for any member to move to
amend the proposed agenda by adding any item which the member desires to add, or
by proposing any other change.

It is wrong to assume, as many do, that the president "sets the agenda." It
is common for the president to prepare a proposed agenda, but that becomes
binding only if it is adopted by the full assembly, perhaps after amendments as
just described. [RONR (10th ed.), p. 363, l. 8-20; see also p. 16 of RONR In
Brief.]

Since the agenda has not formally been approved per the above Rule, I would
like to amend the agenda to add the nomination of members for chairman,
before the meeting at which the votes will be cast. Thus it will give all a
chance to consider anyone they would like and also give those nominated a chance
to think about it before accepting or declining to be nominated for the chair.
