They jump on fires now because they have to.
Our group evaluates fire effects, especially debris flow and landslide potential. Fires can cook the soil, creating a low-permeability surface. Runoff later is much higher than usual.
It’s usually regarding residential areas, but fire debris can also wreak havoc by plugging drainage structures on roadways, threatening the traveling public.
It’s a real issue these days because we did too good a job with Smokey the Bear and fire suppression. Now many places are fire traps loaded with fuels that natural, low intensity fire used to keep at bay. People think this is “natural” then it is is highly unnatural. The famous “urban interface” is what keeps firefighters up at night this time of year.
Archaeologists sometimes get involved also because hidden artifacts are suddenly visible.
