[MRCG] [MRCA] Additional thought on Dayton Hamvention &Otherthings

I was an engineer at Hewlett-Packard (instruments) from the late 1970's
through the late 1990's. For those of you into vintage (e-gad!) test
equipment
you know we were somewhat famous for our gold plated PC boards.
At least twice that I recall there was a push to convert to tin plated
boards
and both times was involved with evaluating production boards I had
designed (gold) re-done with tin. Every time it was a disaster! Dendrites
(conductive wiskers) grew between traces. All that was needed was some
humidity and a small DC potential. Wish I had kept some of the reports
and pics. Dendrites even grew under solder mask. And at the time HP made
all of its boards so we had complete control of the process.

I'm sure great strides have been made but still wonder how 'lead free'
electronics (especially the cheap stuff) will hold up long term.

Lead free solder is garbage. ;) The upside, was that a former employer had
to get rid of all their 62/38. It went home with me!
