The Submarine USS Pampanito had two of them in case one failed.   They were removed after the war, we had to look for years to find two ABK-7 and the elusive control boxes.   They were top secret in WWII and the red box was the manual destruct button.   The Signal Corps version is SCR-595 I think, they are more common and they had an impact destruction switch in case the plane crashed.    BIG NOTICE in the manual ... before landing turn off destruct switch in case of a rough landing.   The destruct charge goes in the hole on the right side with the "L" shaped keeper.     I have read that their were some friendly fire incidences in the Pacific due to malfunctioning transponders.
