Hi Bob - Well, I was one of the guys trying to work AF6IM while he was
parachute mobile with his BC-611. He was approx 19 miles from me (home
QTH), optical line-of sight, and I worked him easily with a 1 watt HT on 2
meters FM. Several times on a couple of jumps during the Pacificon events..

During the BC-611 jump I was running a GRC-9 to a reel antenna wire in the
back yard but I did not work him - and I tried pretty hard - I could not
hear his signal, even while the BFO was on listening for his carrier - no
joy, and I had a low local noise level during the experiment.. I don't know
if he heard me though, he reported QRM during the test. I could hear a
station in Palo Alto (?) trying to call him ...
So that didn't work for me, although 19 miles, clear optical LOS is still a
stretch with a few hundred milliwatts from a very inefficient antenna (and
no "ground" nearby, LOL) . A great experiment nonetheless.... Many miles
LOS over seawater should be very easy and has been reported on by others.
Ground-to-air over very short distances (like to Tac aircraft) should
technically work but I think at a practical combat level, I'm doubtful it
would be useful....

Glider radios : weren't they employed because the twisted pair phone line
wound around the glider tow rope chafed through and failed on takeoff? So
that link was glider- to- tow plane if I remember correctly?...You guys
know...

Sorry to hijack John's VHF jeep radio thread!
