The Clatternet also operated on 40 for awhile (7073 I recall). I had good
40 meter RATT comms to WA/OR and there was a San Diego station that I
worked as well. Worth experiments for sure. During daylight hours 40
should work fine....
Propagation-wise to Riverside, I am essentially co-located with W6TOM,
WA6OPE and N6FEG - so 80 meters in the evenings should be similar to the AM
net on 3985..but RATT should provide a better SNR, all things
considered....I am running an Inverted L set up for local (0-200 miles)
NVIS and it works well. We are 370 miles apart and that is getting into an
area needing a lower angle for that range. It's just "db's" LOL
I am pretty flexible time wise, with a little heads up.
As to hardware, I think the Clatternet was set up around "common" military
RATT parameters - and the PRC-47/CV-2455 provided that in stock
configuration. Maybe not, It may have been an accommodation, but the
participating stations usually had at least one PRC-47 going and the more
flexible transmitters netted to them just fine.
Now to find a 28 Volt MITE terminal for base, mobile and camping Ops. Dave
Ross often ran his PRC-47 with a CV-2455 and MITE terminal at MVCC Camp
Delta - it was quite the show.
