Panel guard mod for an RT-524 transceiver. Basically early days it was discovered the hard way that the existing panel guards were being used as handles and/ or taking the brunt of a lot of impact to the point they’d break right out of the front panel – and take some chunks of the panel with them. The fix was to get these things made up – one per side – which picked up the mounting screws top and bottom and installed over the existing panel guards – the idea being that any impact trauma etc. would be transferred to the more solid mounting and/or the new guard, preserving the factory guards and saving an awful lot of panel replacements (which I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy…even in a depot environment.)
Some people take them off and just go with the factory look (at their own peril) – and apparently later runs of the RT-524 had strengthened panel guards, though I’ve yet to come across one.
