Navy radiomen are eligible for hearing disability if test show they have hearing loss or tenonitis. I was an RM on the USS Wainwright DLG28 and USS Glennon DD840..the radio shack was always noisy with all those TTY's running constantly. I'm on 10% hearing disability. The only time it was quiet was at 0000Z when the cryto gear was being set up for the new day. In normal operation a quiet radio shack was NOT GOOD...it meant the fleet broadcast was down..the life line to the outside world. This was of course all HF except in the Tonkin Gulf (Yankee Station) we had the bird farms re-broadcasting the fleet broadcast on VLF.

There apparently was a lot of hearing loss
among Naval personnel that served on battleships.  My great uncle Charlie was a plank owner Chief Electricians Mate on the battleship West Virginia during new construction and it’s early years of operation.  He had a small disability pension for loss of hearing in one ear as a result of being out on deck when one of it’s big batteries was discharged.
