These receivers do power up. But without the original signal sources
all you can hear is a slight increase in noise output from a signal
generator.
A TS-24/ARR-2 test set will provide the proper modulated
signals. As I understand it, this was used as a go/no go tester before
launch. It does not provide the Morse keying, but it does
demonstrate the operation of the set. The TS-24 is battery powered.
so you will be buying a bunch of 9V batteries.
The TS-24 outputs a signal on UHF mil aero freqs, so I don't
recommend using the antenna on it, just use a short length of
coax to connect to the receiver. I put a resistive pad inside my
TS-24, but one could use attenuators in the coax line.
