Hi Ray - yes the PRC-174 is a bit of a head scratcher...It and the '104
were both designed by Hughes and are otherwise near contemporaries. The
104 sales pitch at the time touted use of Large Scale Integration circuits
(LSI) presumably to save power, volume, improved reliability etc. The 174
does not use any LSI (except maybe the EPROM) or even ASIC's as far as I
can determine... I'm wondering if their original intent for the (cheaper?)
174 was for export only as the 104 won the IHFR competition in contracts.
There seemed to be a market for "para military" type HF gear for countries
with limited resources..

I've used PRC-104's in the service but never had to repair one - or send
one back for repairs . (good radios!)..So far, I'm liking the 174, but then
again it ain't broke..!

GRC-106 FSK: I don't have any experience with one but maybe the idea is
since it is FSK and not AFSK the PA does not need to be biased linearly for
RATT, just biased into Class C and driven harder for FSK? That might
explain the increased power output.. I dunno
