Hi Tim,
The code was a little more sophisticated and efficient than the phonetic
method you describe, which was used for names and for words not covered in
the code.

There were shorthand names for things like rank, different kinds of ships,
aircraft, weapons, etc.

I recommend the book Code Talker by Chester Nez, among others.
