Able Archer '83 will be operating from a retired Cold War Nike missile site (W-25) in Davidsonville Maryland this weekend.
I intend to be on site and have the M151A1 or also known as the self-propelled GRC-106 set up in time for operation on the MMRCG Net on 7.296 USB and later that morning on the M&S Net on 5.357 USB using the event call sign of W3A.
If possible intend to stick around on the same frequency until after the nets and would like to do QSO with any interested stations.
Davidsonville is located between Annapolis and Washington DC, just below Baltimore and with that location it provided an ideal site in the aerial defense of the capital.
With the Able Archer '83 event taking place this weekend there will be an opportunity for period correct military radios to be operating from on time military installation again.
Anyone who wants to operate or take part in the event is welcome to come out and take part. In addition to the mutt we will have other military radios out and operational on site and can always use additional operators and equipment if you want to drag something out and take part yourself.
The mutt has a VRC-43 and will be monitoring 51.0 during the event and may also monitor a two meter channel but I will use something like a URC-110 with no PL.
I intend to be operating only period correct military equipment from the sixties to the eighties.
They have a repeater in Davidsonville on 147.105+ with a PL of 107.2 and maybe I can monitor that in the mutt and if necessary use the radio in the truck to talk back? Or maybe cobble together a external PL generator and connect it to the "X" mode connector on the URC but somehow that looks like cheating.
So if you're in the Baltimore / Washington area this Saturday is an opportunity to get out and operate in the field or at least visit people who are.
