[MRCA] AS-2259 Antenna

Al:
I stand corrected – somewhat. I agree the antenna that was described on page 29 of the TM (I hadn’t read that far when I put together my earlier response) would probably put a good signal straight up into the ionosphere. Heck, even a simple low dipole would work NVIS wonders.
I guess what my initial answer focused on was an NVIS antenna as a component of the SCR-284. I didn’t see anything other than the MS-XX mast sections in the Load lists on page 1 of that TM. And because Mark wanted to build a period-accurate NVIS antenna, I assumed (danger, Will Robinson!) he meant he wanted to know the SCR-284 component for an NVIS radiator.
My error.

P.S. I’ve enjoyed Joe’s tales of his LRRP experiences while in Vietnam and elsewhere. In fact, it was at his suggestion one year at Gilbert that we held up the ends of a dipole over our heads and used it for our 3.885 work during our field trial. We proved once again that his LRRP field-expedient NVIS antenna worked then and now.

......As for the ground mounted antenna for the BC-654, TM 11-275 shows only a vertical antenna mounted on the insulator on the side of the BC-654, along with counterpoise wires on the ground. There is no antenna component that we would today call an NVIS radiator. So I conclude there never was an NVIS antenna for the BC-654 and the AS-2259 is, to the best of my recollection, a Vietnam-era radiator, used extensively by LLRP chaps.
Gene,
With all due respect. If this won't radiate a good signal in a vertical direction, I'll eat my hat.

Oh, and ask Joe Munson what they used for an antenna on the PRC-74's in Laos.
