Is there any interest by MRCA members to support the Memorial Day Weekend event at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Home and Library in Hyde Park New York on Memorial Day Weekend? This event is an INVITATION ONLYevent for those participating. If there is interest, I will approach the event coordinators. The FDR Home and Library is about 80 miles directly north of New York City, right on the Hudson River. The event itself normally starts set up on the Thursday before the weekend starts, and ends on Sunday early afternoon. All participants need to be packed up and off site by 5 pm on the Sunday of the event. There are hotels close by, and camping is allowed on site for the duration of the event ( no alcohol, no campfires allowed on site ) . Normal frequencies in net use throughout the event are 3885 kc AM, and 29.6 and 29.1 MHz FM. Of course, other net set ups are available ( hey, it's a free country ). Only portable antennas are permitted, and must not in any way damage the local trees shrubbery or any part of the infrastructure on the grounds, and must be removed at the end of the event. Last year, this event was held in conjunction with Museum Ship Weekend, where several Museum Ships use their radio rooms go on the air on Ham radio. If there is enough interest, we may be able to set up an event for just the MRCA through the National Park Service, through their NPS On the Air program in the future.
I will be there with my WC-52 and my BC-654 ( which hopefully will work this year) and BC-611s on 3885 kc, and hopefully with a BC-659 on 29.6 and 29.1 MHz FM. This is an all era event, and radio operators with working military radios from World War One to the Present Day can participate. Non-military equipment is not allowed. The main focus of this event is historical reenacting, so a uniform proper for the time period of your equipment is encouraged.
Spots for radio operators will be very limited in any event ( I can see openings for 4 to 5 operators at most ). Should there be operators that just show up without an invitation, they will be prohibited from setting up, and will be escorted off the property is necessary. 2018 will be the 27th year this event has taken place in Hyde Park. Participant invitations are done at the discretion of the Staff and the Special Event Coordinator at the FDR Home, and The Duffle Bag Inc. , who has organized and run this event for it's entire 27 year run.
