I have 2 of these, one is operating, I haven't tried the other because it's full of fine sand inside in the gears, so I gave to get rid of that sand/grease gook. It came from one of the desert aircraft graveyards.
My operating one, with the original dynamotor puts out just a tad under 40 W. Haven't looked at the modulation as I always used it on CW, just monitored the audio on another receiver. I use the Navy RS-38 mike with it.
What I can do is - when I have time - to get on the local 75 m AM net and ask someone to look at the modulation. If I get about the same as you, it is definitely by design...
