And I thought the ARRL existed just to collect dues, pay all their cronies up North lots of money and promote an atmosphere of you have to have the newest widget or device out there to be a complete Ham to keep the advertisers in QST happy?
But then again any organization is only the sum of its members and in the thirty or forty years that I have belonged to the ARRL cannot think of anything that I have done for them or the community at large so perhaps the problem is me.

I don’t know the ARRL that well but once an organization is created, the first order of business is usually the continuation of the organization. If they see contesting and sport as the way to do that, they won’t spend a lot of effort supporting other reasons for ham radio.
