Well, problems are solved at the last place we look.  It seems the (or a) prior owner, in wiring up the power plug, provided a short from +28v to the adjacent muting pin.  In the words of Chief Inspector Clouseau, problem sol-ved...Jeep K3HVG

Subject: [MRCA] R-392 operation/maintenance query

Among other projects, I'm attempting to work the
bugs out of an R-392.  Typical of these units, the guts are very
clean but many caps are now looking like woolly caterpillars.
However, my question is this:  The receiver operates acceptably
well ONLY in the NET position.  The BFO, CAL, all functions are,
or appear, normal.  In the NORMAL, SQUELCH, and LIMITER
positions, the rig is dead, audio wise.  The S-meter appears
to still move normally, however, indicating that part of the
receiver is functioning.  I don't have a book yet and the BAMA
split schematics are hell to try and use.  Reading the manual,
it really doesn't tell the functionality of the NET position.  I
would assume it keeps the receiver un-muted to zero beat the
T-195?  If that's the case, maybe some muting relay is being
held up?  Any thoughts will be appreciated....
