A simple way to obtain 12 volts on the M151A1 is tap in between the 
batteries if you have the original two (2) battery configuration. I  
Don't recommend having the equipment ON during engine start due to the 
voltage surge/spike after the starter is released.  That is why the red 
placard is placed on the vehicle.
     Actually that is good advice for operations with any military or 
civilian vehicle is to have equipment off during engine start. I am not 
worried about front end overload that was just a "zorro" remark.
