[MRCA] Removing silicone

Hi friends, i am working on a prc-132 and the hold up battery needs replacing. But it had been covered in silicone caulk both the battery itself and the solder side of the pcb. I suspect this was done to help prevent shorting. The manual also recommend putting this on the battery and certain other places on the board.

So the question is, what is the best method to remove it? It it's quite stubborn. I have had some success using an exacto knife, but i am afraid it will scratch the board and maybe ruin a trace. Any other suggestions?

Thanks
Eugene
