Ray,
The suspect tuners are the original (SCR-299/399) BC-939 single-wire 
tuner.  The other tuner used with the BC-610 and others is the TMC 
TAC-1.  The TAC-1 a fully balanced tuner that will accommodate single 
wire, coax, or balanced two-wire.  The TAC-1 is a fine tuner but 
potentially very expensive.  The TAC-1 uses two thermocouple modules for 
the power meters that are oft times found to be literally burned out.  
There's a fix using a toroid transformer and detector circuit.
