[MRCA] PRT-4/PRR-9 power

Scott:

The PRR-9 battery is 6 Volts but you can use a 9-Volt battery in its place. One drawback about this higher voltage is that the squelch doesn't fully shut off. I read there is a bias adjustment available inside the RX but I never messed with it on mine.

As for the PRT-4, I use two 9-Volt batteries in series instead of the normal 15 Volts from the standard batt. You can fit the two batts inside the normal batt case that is part of the PRT-4. I needed to stuff a folded paper towel in first so that the batts would fit better and not bang around inside the case.

They're good radios but I never understood how they were supposed to be used - the squad leader had the TX and his men had the RX's on their helmets? Try using a pair yourself with the RX on a helmet and see if the feedback howl doesn't give away your location to the bad guys. The earpiece is essential in that case to silence the speaker; but then what purpose is served by the sound horn part of the case? The Marines developed their own integrated version - PRC-88 - that had both TX and RX in the same case, presumably with the proper PTT changeover circuitry and RX muting on TX.

I use standard batteries, if you are lucky and have an original transmitter battery you can rebuild the battery.
The receiver power connector can be fabricated with 5/32 and 1/8 inch standard brass tubing and epoxy available at the nearest "Hobby" store.
Its a great set and an easy way to get on 51.0 for military Rallies as most of the sets were on that frequency. I even mounted a set on my transportation" at Gilbert. The set is mounted on a small aluminum plate "Snatch Plate"and is removable and can be used as a "hand held".

Are there any good methods for powering the PRT-4/PRR-9 combination out there? I own a pair, and getting them to work would be beneficial for something I have to do at work.
