I have a couple of them and do use one similar to the way you described.

The problem is that it is minus gain compared to a six meter vertical.

You trade gain for bandwith,

Subject: [MRCA] SF 3512/VRC antenna

Hello all,

Anyone ever play with this antenna? They are broadband, 30-512 MHz. Some
versions of this have a built in diplexer. I was thinking of using this for
6 meter comms and using a diplexer also using it for a 2m/440 radio. Anyone
own one of these? Anyone ever sweep it?

It is also known as the Harris RF-390
Spec is here:

Thanks!
