I commented this morning on the Old Mil Radio net re having read that during the establishment of the South Pole Station during the International Geophysical Year (IGY) in the late 50s  it appeared that they at first used a GRC-9  that was later replaced by a TBW transmitter (not sure about the replacement receiver, if any- maybe an  RBM?)

At any rate, a quick Google search came up with this link with a boatload of info about the operation of setting up the South Pole IGY station which indeed confirms the use of a GRC-9 initially and later a TBW for radio comms there back then.  Interesting read!
