Joe, et al,

Joe, that's what we want to do, 100+ miles almost straight up and 100+
miles straight down to HQ at Gilbert 15 miles away on the other side of
a 1500-foot ridge. Works like a champ if we pick the right freq.

Yes, Breck, it is NVIS, and not groundwave. If it were groundwave, a
15-ft whip would do the trick, and it won't.

Eugene, a simple antenna will work just fine, low and horizontal. My
favorite is a 100-foot doublet fed with twin lead. (A short piece (20
ft) of coax is probably OK) A decent tuner will pull this down to 75 and
up to 40 easily. It's nearly resonant on 60. In fact this is the
station antenna here in Jersey City, about 25-30 feet high with the last
10 feet of each end drooping down. The military NVIS antennas, like the
AS-2259, really aren't that great. They are broad-banded (read lossy)
to easily support frequency hopping. You're probably the closest guy.

Now, the optimum frequency for NVIS changes with the time of day, season
of the year, and point in the 11-year sunspot cycle. 60-meters is
probably our best shot, but we can't run AM there. My recent
observations suggest that 75 is dead at that time of day.

My personal dilemma is that I'd like to run the MI-8751/SCR-288 that's
served me well in past exercises, but it won't tune 40-meters. I'll
probably bring the AN/GRC-9 that does 2-12 MHz. I think we should be
prepared to use 40.

Is anyone available at 15:00 EDT tomorrow 7 SEP?

Al
