Switches now ain't what switcher were!
Years ago when I got my first R-392 I spent days trying to figure out what was wrong with it. As it turned out it was the power supply. I didn't know it was a switcher at the time & learned the hard way. It sent crap from one end of the spectrum to the other.
Fast forward a few years & companies like SGC specifically warn users against the use of switching supplies even on their amps. On these they preferred unregulated, just filtered DC supplies with no load voltages you could weld with.
Today the technology used in switching supplies has progressed to the point that you may not even realize it's a switcher(aside from it's size-current ratio). I use Laptop supplies with my PRC-1099, FT-817, IC-703 etc, etc. I use DC-DC supplies to run my 24vdc pack sets off 12 that were also intended for use with lap tops. In the case of the R-392 you can get a laptop 24vdc switcher supply for a few bucks, if it don't work, throw it away & get another one.
