Yes, I know. Old business. Sometimes I kind of get lost in things.
First off, Dennis, thank you for the rundown. I looked at the antenna bases
for the PRC-174 & PRC-515 and decided they could be made in an adequately
equipped machine shop but not easily. Cobbling together something either
for pedestrian mobile or for picnic table or vehicular mobile use pro tem
might work but it wouldn't be much use otherwise. I'm not fond of jury
rigged setups but they can be done.
Creating a self-contained system using commercial equipment (ex - a TS-450
as the base) would be possible but it would require some serious engineering
and repackaging to make work and the cost benefit wouldn't be there. Would
I do it? Sure, but only as a "fun" project. When it stops being fun, it's
time to quit.
Considering my location (Hawaii), something with a little more power like
the PRC-319 or PRC-515 would probably be my best bet for any sort of
reliable communications. It might also mean walking around (or at least
sitting on a park bench) with a dipole over my head but so be it.
Which reminds me, when it's time to get a walker, is it still pedestrian
mobile? :-)
Best regards,

Note to self: Need more henchmen, good ones this time. Also, start
auditions for new female lab assistant.
