I sent similar messages to Jan, Crystek, Bomar, & CAL.
So far the only one to answer has been Bomar. They say that they do not have the
subject radio in their data base(little did they know that I'm aware that they
have no data base). They offered to test an original crystal for $50 & produce
those I needed from that pattern. They didn't offer a ball park figure for the
cost even though I specifically asked for their pricing structure. In years past
I had very good service from Bomar. Ahhhh, the good oll days.
Though I have not dealt with Jan in many years, when I did I had nothing but
trouble with their crystals. If I was lucky enough to have one work upon
receipt, you could bet that within a year they would either fail, or drift so
far off as to become unusable(these were all Land Mobile xtals). Crystek, their
neighbor, wasn't any better. BTW, years ago I supplied both of these companies
with the specs for many military radios such as the PRC-6 & PRT-4 etc so that
they could make them for me.
The last owner of CW/KC/American Crystals, John Morrison, has been dead for over
10 years though he is still listed on many sites. Nobody knows what happened to
his equipment except that several attempts were made to buy it from his widow. &
Yes, it's true M&H is no longer making xtals, just selling off the old stocks.
They have not responded either except to confirm that they are indeed no longer
in production. I wrote them a couple days ago because I came across their site
without the fire-disclaimer.
Indeed International is still in business & very willing to make whatever you
want. They have a new price schedule, who can afford a near $50 xtal to put in a
play toy radio?
I thought that with everything going off shore(Jan & Crystek xtals are all made
"off shore"), I'd be able to find a supplier in the orient. Hell, I I've been
buying mic connectors & such at 2/$1.00 w/free postage. I did find a few but
none with any published pricing. I learned a long time ago, & have recently
reaffirmed, "If you must ask, you can't afford it".
Joe, WA4VAG, had a Kachina xtal rig on our 75mtr net the other night. He used a
DDS board he had purchased at Dayton last year for around $20. I wish I had
known about it, I'd have bought a bunch of them. PC programmed it was a little
bigger than a postage stamp.
