Rich,
I see in your tag line that you were in a MOB, and also at Lajes. In
the late 60's, I was a tech-rep assigned to the 2nd MOB at Sembach. I
was supporting the TRN-17 TACAN and the ITT GCA. I did get to rub
shoulders with the Herd when we did the NEXRAD at OKC (and Tinker). In
the mid-90's, I was the Govt. project manager for, among other sites,
the NEXRAD radar system at Lajes. We put that one up on top of the
extinct volcano... Santa Barbara? I recall all the great eating places
in Pria. I got a tour from the Comm Sqdn (our sponsor) of the HF-SSB
airways setup. As a kid I'd hear Lajes Airways and think about that
exotic place. I was there, generally, in the summer/good wx part of the
year but the initial site selection was done in March, as I recall. We
had horizontal rain up on the hill. Lajes is the first place I ever saw
an all-female aircrew, a KC-10 bunch from a reserve unit. The
interesting thing was that they were all on a first name basis, even on
base. I overheard the boomer addressing the A/C by her first name.
Sort of a stretch, I thought. Maybe its something to do with the new
thinking regarding "crew-integration/integrity".
