Rich,
I'm the fellow who did the two ER articles on the 102E radio set. I
have two of them currently on the air and find them worth the price.
I've had numerous QSOs (when conditions are conducive, of course) and
find them fun to use. If you can find one already in the lower 48,
you'll save upwards of $75-$100 on shipping from Canada. That's about
the only rub with them. When bought new from Red Star, they come in 6
packages. Some are now being sold sans the generator. That's OK,
however, IF the power cable is still there. The front panel connector
on the tx is not a generic type (unlike virtually all others on both the
rx and tx). I do, have a work-around for that eventuality. I'm told
that some have used the GRC-9 power supplies with the 102E. That's ok
except for the fact that the 102E (type 137) receiver uses a floating B-
to develop audio bias. But, like the BC-348, it appears you can bet
away with using a grounded B-, albeit with some possible audio
distortion, etc. If you build a supply, there's a nice TO-220 Fairchild
1.5v regulator available that does the job perfectly. Let me know if
you get one of these sets and I'll be happy to share info.

Apparently the RX works on dry batteries but the TX takes a hand cranked generator. I would think it would not be all that hard to come up with an AC supply for this set.
