It's a test set for ground checkout of airborne IFF (identi-
fication-friend-or-foe) systems, specifically the Philco-
made SCR-695. Was part of a couple of maintenance
kits coded IE-46 and -56. It's basically a superregenerative
receiver that "squegs" at a supersonic frequency and, despite
having no antenna, radiates enough signal through the wood
case to activate the IFF set on the flight line. The IFF
responds with pulses which are picked up on the BC-1066
and run through a two-stage audio amp (the 1D8 tube) to
drive headphones. Battery supply is 1.5 and 135 V. Freq-
uency range is of the order of 157-187 MHz.
