[Motorola] Amplified speaker question

I have a white moto amplified speaker (MICOR vintage, I believe)...  I like
the high frequency response, might help on the repeater back home which has
very muffled audio.  At any rate, I now know that:

Brown= "IN" - Audio input
Green= "SQ" - squelch?
Black, White = Ground (V-)
Red, Yellow = "V+" - 12V in
Shield= "ret" - audio ground

Now, the questions-

If I tie SQ up to 12V, the speaker turns on.  Im guessing this is just
turning a transistor or something on and off...   What SHOULD it be tied
to??
