I can only tell you about a 33MHz system I work with.  We use Mitreks,
both for base and mobile units.  These have been out of production
for some time now.  The Maratrac would be a more recent programmable
radio for low band.  I am not sure what is current production.

Listening direct can help as audio processing through a repeater
may reduce quality.  What were you using for a receiver?  That would
also have an effect on the quality you hear.
