[Motorola] can a 2-channel HT-1000 be expanded?

If you are talking HT1000's, yes, you can go from 2 channels to 16, and
taht's as High as you can go. You'll need a new plastic knob, or you can
carefully carve out the inside stopper and use that. It's the only thing
that is preventing the switch from accessing all 16 positions. Worse case
scenario, you'll have to buy a new flex assembly with the knobs. You
should then be able to dump in a 16 channel codeplug and be done with it.
Not too hard a mod. The HT1000 will not go anywhere above 16 channels,
the radio has barely enough space for the 16 with the option set as it is.
If you need more look at a MT2000.
Interms of the HT600, you can expand it only to 6 channels. These radios
will not scan either. You should be able to start the RSS, (without
reading the radio first) put all your channels and settings in, and then
program the radio. This should enable all 6 channels. DON'T FORGET to
correctly set the band! IF it does not enable the channels, you might
need a handy application 2to6.exe - this will make a modification to the
radio, and allow the 6 channels to be accessed. You'll have to look at
the knob, it has the same type of stopper that the HT1000 has. One thing
that happened while doing a 2 to 6 channel conversion was that it would
repeat channels 1 and 2 on 3,4 and 5,6 respectivly. 2to6.exe resolved
this problem I believe, and one that was giving us trouble took a few
different tires with 2to6 to get right.
If you end up with the spare knobs, it's fun to drop the 2 channel one on
a friends radio and watch him freak out. It's quite fun.
Enjoy,
Alex
