Understandable -
However, your not following what would be considered "good" practices
while programming.
Ultimatly the method you describe works for you, saves you time, and saves
you a lot of effort - so be it. If the toaster ain't broke why fix it.
I will caution you - it's not the "correct" method. Windows "DOS" will
work fine for programming, however keep in mind that windows does what it
wants to whenever it feels it is convient. This can be while you are
programming your radio.
If you want to program your radio correctly, start with a nice 486. I
have found that they all work equally well, most people recomend a
486-25/33. Install dos 6.x.x either on the hard drive or on a floppy.
You can then boot off the hard drive or floppy, and run the RSS from your
local hard drive.
If you want to do it right, and not risk anything - it's a good solid way.
The only way to get windows out of memory is to complely shut the computer
off or reboot. Using the f8 trick will get you cleanly into a shell
without loading anything that plays with your serial port.
Again, i'm just warning you - I'm not trying to say your programming
practices are bad - but they certainly aren't what the ultimate tech would
like.
As my friend says - do you think the laptops that they use at the Depot
have games, windows (exception being CPS machines), office, etc? Nope,
they certainly don't.
