I can't speak to your situation at all, but I do know of issues where 
security people go way beyond the rules.   In the rail fan world this is 
sometimes rampant from what I read.  People are arrested for taking 
pictures of trains.  I had a friend from out of state eleven years ago 
take photos of South Station in Boston and get chewed out big time for 
doing it.  A few years later I was in Grand Central Terminal in New York 
City and asked the security guard if I could take pictures.  Of course I 
could.  He wondered why I even asked.

Sometimes security people interpret the rules according to their 
understanding which may in actuality be a misunderstanding. Hopefully 
that is the case here.
