Every antenna is affected by multiple variables - failure to
understand them can make a good antenna perform poorly and
a good understanding can help a weak antenna design perform
better.
In addition to the near-field environment is the broader
geographical environment.
e.g. a simple dipole with a clear broadside exposure to the
Atlantic Ocean on a bay may have extraordinary performance
to Europe and Africa while the same antenna further from
the ocean may be mediocre.
The mounting location of a mobile antenna, details of the
mounting, and the structure of the vehicle (be aware of more
plastic - a poor groundplane) and more electronics (more
rfi).
