Steve: There are a number of cases that I know of personally in which there  
are severe noise problems with the electronic injectors that are used on the 
GM  and Ford diesel engines. I also have heard of similar issues with the 
Cummins  diesels powering most Dodge pick-ups and light trucks.  In checking with a 
 friend, who is the parts manager for one of the Mercedes dealers here in  
Houston, he knows of no issues with the Mercedes diesels. However, Mercedes does 
 control their injectors electronically. I'd check with the service manager 
for  your local Mercedes zone or region.
 
Incidentally, I've had no problems with the mechanical injectors on early  GM 
diesels. I currently run an IC 706 in a 130 hp Case diesel farm tractor and  
on a smaller John Deere and have no issues. However....they both have  
mechanical injectors.
