The smart folks tell me that a major portion (all?) of radiation from a
screwdriver antenna is from the lower portion, and that the whip portion
is mostly a "capacity hat".

So, for that and for many other reasons I mounted mine out front of my
front bumper, and up 14 inches so it would all be above my hood. It gets
out well, but I have not scien-terrifically compared it with other
options. But I do know that it is a much, much better performer than a 102
inch whip & tuner combo on the top of my metal roofed Subaru station wagon.
