Some of the reasons I won't use a tuner to solve a problem like this,
the mismatch goes away for the rig, but all you really do is heat up the
inductive and capacitance elements in the tuner when the matching
occurs. (I know you're about to say, well the screwdriver matches too,
but remembering shootouts on 75 meters, the matching method does put out
more RF, maybe it's time for a 40M shootout to make that point for 40M
too, I know when I tried a test about 12 years ago with a Field Strength
meter, an attenuator and the same minivan and rig as well, the
screwdriver was about 7dB stronger than a Hustler 40M coil on 40 meters)

I can't do anything about you thinking a screwdriver is ugly, but you
can build one for under $75 if you can find aluminum irrigation tubing
and have access to lathe if you order a copy of the WorldRadio CD with
Don Johnson's books on them (I don't think they're in print anymore),
the ones I've build have worked as well as the commercial ones that cost
a lot more and there's always the ElectraSlide Antenna from a club in
Texas for about $200.00 with shipping.
